Yep, the average tunic is not made for those of us who are nonskinny!

The trapezoidal front and back panels are one good solution. Another is to have side panels (the side gores/godets) which are not pointed, but have a few inches across the top. They would start at the armhole, still, though, and require some finessing with the sleeves.

I find this a lot in modern clothing: I am fat, but my shoulders are still size 12; it's things from around my armpit and downwards that are size 22. For float dresses, I order for my shoulders, because the rest will fit!
