I looked up the word in both my French and Italian dictionaries. Both
"crepiter" (French) and "crepitare" (Italian), mean "to rustle", so could
it
be a petticoat that makes a rustling noise, like taffeta?
No, this is not from crépiter, this is from crêper, or the old spelling
cresper (to ruffle). Not the same origin at all. (You can't remove the
"iter" in the verb to make another word, it loses its meaning. If it was
from "crépiter", it would have become something like "crépitine", not
"crépine".) Well, in French at least. I'd expect the Italian to be the same.
