There´s also a place called "Archeon" in the
Netherlands. They have reconstructed medieval,
prehistoric and roman buildings and people in
matching period clothes live and work in them.
There is a similar medieval town in Nyköbing in
Denmark and I try to get there once every summer
because it´s so beautiful and interesting. But I
have a late 14th century SCA-Persona, so I might be a bit biased. :-)
(OT: If you go into a supermarket, buy some
"Chocolade pasta puur". It´s like German
"Nutella", but without nuts and not as sweet and very good.)
I went to Amsterdam some years ago for work so I
didn´t get to do much sightseeing but strolled
around the town along the Grachten and looked at the beautiful houses.
Best wishes,
Hanna

It's been, um, almost 20 years since we lived in Amsterdam... but
FWIW my family really liked the outdoor museum at Enkhuizen. Think
living history farms, except it's the everyday lives of 19th C.
fisher folk instead of farmers. :-) Good costume content, too. We
day-tripped it by train, IIRC. There's also a nice art museum in The
Hague but my feeble brain no longer remembers the name of it.
There used to be a couple of preserved windmills in one [or more?] of
the Amsterdam city parks, and be sure to take a bike ride through
Amstel Park and go eat pancakes at the famous pancake house...
assuming it's still there!
Enviously,

I'm going to be in Amsterdam for a vacation next week and maybe a bit
after, and as usual I'm looking for ideas of where to go with an
extended family group. I'm mostly in to high fashion historic
costuming, social dance & history from the early Renn up to and
including the 19th century. We're also interested in more than just
wearable stuff: castles, living history events.
My husband, bro-in-law, sis in law & I are all engineers and some of
the teenage nephews are headed that way so ships, airplanes, how a
wind mill works, science & tech museums are good fun.
If you have any ideas for family friendly events (the family runs ages
10-70+), we'd like those, too. We'll have cars, so sites 1-2 hrs out
of town are also accessible.
Got any great suggestions?
Got any "out there" suggestions?
