Is it really stiff - could the stiffness be washed out? And is it a deep violet? I wonder if you couldn't do something from the Directoire/Empire/Regency period with it. I worked on an extant one that was bright saffron! Some of those gowns had trains, which I am sure could be made to be removable if you didn't want to be dragging that around all the time.
