Are you certain you're thinking of the same book? Every edition I've seen of
Planche's Cyclopedia is two volumes (sometimes rebound as one volume). I still
find this on open stacks sometimes, esp. at old city or college libraries.
I see on WorldCat that there are a handful of libraries that list an edition
that was created from combining the British and US editions as "two volumes in
four"; perhaps that is what you're thinking of? It's not the standard, though.
I should note that, fun as this is, it is a notoriously unreliable source.
Those of you who have seen my lecture on Victorian costume scholarship may
recall that I spend a long time on Planche, and I show a number of slides from
the Cyclopedia to demonstrate his habits of "correcting" costume details and
his reliance on other people's drawings rather than actual medieval works.
