What am I missing? I downloaded a 30MB .pdf. It ends abruptly at p.272 midsentence.

OK, answering my own question. The link forwarded to the list was to Volume 1, part 1. There are also pages for Vol. 1, part 2:
http://www.archive.org/details/p2cyclopediaofc01planuoft

Vol 2, part 1:
http://www.archive.org/details/p1cyclopediaofco02planuoft

and Vol. 2, part 2:
http://www.archive.org/details/p2cyclopediaofco02planuoft

Still, there are only two volumes. This library's copy (according to the listing) has been split and bound into four books. The split of Volume 1 is hardly thoughtful, as the first book ends midsentence on p. 272, in the middle of "Head-Dress." Part 2 picks up with p. 273, nothing before that, and ends on p. 527, although there are two plates stuck at the end (one of them scanned upside-down). I haven't looked to see where the rest of the plates are bound, or if they're missing.

Volume 2, the General History, is also split midsentence, between pages 216 and 217 (out of a total of 448).

This will be really useful to have at home. I've spent way too much time with it at way too many libraries ... but I wouldn't recommend it for anything but entertainment. I use it mostly for tracking down the origins of costume myths.
