It would not be too early if you were in Europe or had your dress made in 
Europe. But in the States, the elliptical silhouette is really not seen 
until the last months of the civil war (1865). You'd probably find Juanita 
Leisch's book _Who Wore What? Women's Wear 1861-1865_ quite useful; even 
though it doesn't show a large number of ball gowns.
