My favorite hoop:
Twill tape 1"/1 1/2" set on a waist band, front h/e closure. Three are set
center back at2" intervals at the top; 15" at the hem.? Then ther are two sets,
either side set 5" and 4" from the nearest back tape. These are 16" and 10" at
the bottom base. The top hoop is set 10" down the?verticle tapes and is about
56".? the remainder of the hoops are set every 2" down the tape; there are 15
hoops set in this manner. The bottom is about144", so the enlarged increments
will increase Slightly as you go...maybe about 2/3"?each level.
The hoops are best set by hand, Hang the belt with the attached verticle tapes
on your dress form and do the top and bottom rows first. Once hung in this
manner you will easily see how the guageing of the hoops?will form an elipitcal
cone.
I once used pocket drapery tape to take advantage of the courses of the fabric
and it did take away some of the tedious sewing;?however, as the twill is wider
than regular twill tape, the cutting and prepping of fabric added to the
time...but it works.
Sound a little confusing I imagine, but as I suggested, once you have the tapes
attached to the waistband, the next steps will be visable.? Main measurement to
be aware of is the setting of the top hoop...it must be free from the hips.
This caged crinoline supports a nice full petticoat as well as the dress to be
worn over it!

Subject: Re: [h-cost] Query RE: early Civil War women's dress You are reading
my mind--I was just wondering: were there different
sizes of hoops, or styles of hoops worn--i.e. the hoops I"ve seen
patterned for ball gowns were very round and wide; were the hoops that
might be worn at home narrower or different?
And do you have a link or a photo or diagram of your hoops from that
period, so I could see what the configuration is, that they would fold up
so easily to sit down?
