It isn't really comprehensive, but _Uniforms of the Infantry 1919 to the Present_ by Jörg M. Hormann has a section on walking out uniforms, and some pictures of mess uniforms from that time. It's volume 2 of a series called "German Uniforms of the 20th Century". Volume 1 was on panzer troops (which I haven't read), and I don't know if there were any others.
