It turns out I'm not completely at fault here. It looks like the mailing list won't allow you to change the subject line when replying to a post. I *had* changed the subject line but the mailing list changed it back. Try it for yourself by replying to this post and changing the subject line.

Hey, DON'T change the topic of this thread again and DON'T continue
discussing your problem. PLEASE open your own thread.

Ugh. I hit "reply" with the intent of reusing the return address
and changing the subject line. I forgot to change the subject line which
led to this mess. Sorry :(

With respect to the documentation, other databases have said the
same in writing but when it came down to the actual implementation they
did not follow their own specification. So you're saying that H2's
implementation works as documented? :)

I'm also curious:
1) Why you hijacked somebody's else topic? The guy you did this to has
a serious problem, not a simple question that may be answered by
reading documentation.
2) Why haven't you read the documentation first? Per
http://www.h2database.com/html/advanced.html:"If it is possible that
the objects don't fit into memory, then the data type CLOB (for
textual data) or BLOB (for binary data) should be used. For these data
types, the objects are not fully read into memory, by using streams."
