I think that getting rid of caching the LOBs at client side is a good idea.
Let client software deal with caching. That is a good separation of concerns.

Yes, I think so. I will increase the priority of "Don't use temp
files" and add "Also to allow opening client / server (remote)
connections when using LOBs" (I didn't think about that so far).
