I run all my sites on Joyent which run on Solaris/OpenSolaris and I don't
have any problems.  The only issue I've ever encountered was with Habari and
it's use of GLOB_BRACE which I helped resolve in ticket #182.  In this case
GLOB_BRACE was documented not to be available on non-GNU systems anyway.

I run PHP on Solaris for dev too and I can't think of any issues that I've
encountered to be specific to PHP on Solaris.

PHP 5 runs like a dream on Solaris, so I don't think you need to worry about
the use of Solaris as the base OS: it shouldn't make much difference to the
operation of hp.o.
