Yes, the dropbutton use was intentional. The idea was to provide an button that could be extended to include additional actions. Other actions could include links that pop up lightbox-style interfaces to manipulate an image before insertion, or choosing (in the case of a video container) whether to insert a thumbnail or an embedded player. There is also good reason to keep the external link in the title. The dropbutton in the media interface is used to insert or apply the media to the post being edited. The external link is not such an action, and does not belong in this set of links. Also, there is no other way to visit the native store of the media than the external link. Consider the Flickr browser. The only way to visit the Flickr photo page for an image is to click that link icon. This is similar to other services that we offer connection to. These reasons define the external link as something separate from the dropbutton actions, yet necessary to the adequate functioning of the media interface.
