I'm still a novice too, so there's a possibility I'll get this answer wrong, but I *think* I know the answer, so I'm going to give it a shot.
You'll need to add the code to your theme file, but you don't want to edit the original theme code. What you'll want to do is edit the footer.php file of the theme you're using in the user/themes folder. Just place the GA code right above the closing body tag (/body) and that should do it.
