Couldn't Habari be extented with some plugins be a better wiki?

I started a thread over on -dev [1] last week asking why we use
MediaWiki as our wiki and if anyone know of better alternatives. There
wasn't much response over there, so I thought I'd expand the question
to -users.
Have any of you used a wiki platform that you think worked well? It
seems all the ones I've looked at have been a "lesser of the evils" -
they do something better, but they're not really *good*. Ideally the
perfect wiki would be PHP based, but at this point I'm not willing to
rule anything out as a possibility... Suggestions?
