Well, I think the "explicit opt-in" is the downloading of the sensor.  If 
they download and install the sensor then it seems that they explicitly 
want to collect data.  Having to configure the sensor.properties file after 
explicitly downloading the sensor is a step too much.

Haha.. And I don't think this sensor.properties issue is going to make 
Hackystat appear less big brother-ish to other developers.

Yes, of course we can do this, if we decide that's the policy we want to have.
I do feel that the current policy of "explicit opt-in", while it can lead 
to some loss of data, does reduce the Big Brotherishness of the 
system.  It somehow feels better to me that each user has to explicitly 
give permission for each new sensor type to become active.

On the other hand, this explicit opt-in policy reduces the usability of 
the system and creates one more problem the user has to diagnose and correct.

Which do we value more highly: usability or control/privacy?
