You *must* compact your folders frequently, or simply tune the Thunderbird options to do it automatically, else all your deleted emails will stay stored in your files. The reason why it works like this is to optimize the mbox file access: deleting an email is simply done as marking it deleted without really removing it from the mbox file. This way, Thunderbird doesn't have to rewrite the full mbox file (which may be as big as 1 GB size for people not managing their emails correctly) for each deletion. So the "compact" process is simply the removal of all emails marked deleted in the mbox file. There is a general compaction command from the File menu. Note that compacting is not the same as compressing. The former is reducing size by removing the junk hence the latter is reducing size by applying mathematical algorithms on the data. -- Jean Christophe "????" ANDR? ?
