You can think of cluster or "server farm"... j/k I think a more practical solution would be making the computer which your friend gave you a fileserver with minimal configuration and good storage, and then make it headless. So you don't mess around with the crazy idea of building a cluster which is far beyond the reach of either current technology for end-user and your knowledge.
