> The router reports that my WAN address is 58.187.122.60. > Ok, this is good news since it means you have a real public (aka routable) address. This one is from FPT for sure, just check with "whois 58.187.122.60". > However, as I look at tracert's output, I can tell that that IP is not correct When you are using traceroute, you will see the IP addresses from the routers you pass through. But routers generally have multiple IP addresses, one on each network they are connected to. And the one you will see is the one used to answer to you, which is the one on your side, not the Internet side. On this side, the private one between you and the ISP, it can perfectly be a private IP address, without forbidding you to get a real public IP address on your modem. It's a quite common practice now that we start to lack IPv4 addresses. > and is different from the IP that whatismyip.com reports. > This is because most ISP are using "transparent" (not really though) proxies to optimize their international bandwidths. > the correct one is 192.168.255.17 or something in its class. > I think this is the one from the next gateway, from your side point of view. > http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3644/3421678164_3b3b0d1e10_o.jpg > Is that OK? > It's not good from a security point of view, but with this configuration it should work, yes. > $alias tracert=traceroute > Yurgl... Are you aliasing dir to ls too?!? :-D Well... Don't tell me, I think I prefer not to know... ;-) -- Jean Christophe "????" ANDR? ? ? ?
