I've just rebuilt using ./make_gnu.sh and everything seems ok.
gcc -version says:
powerpc-apple-darwin9-gcc-4.0.1
Mine seems to be the same:
powerpc-apple-darwin9-gcc-4.0.1 (GCC) 4.0.1 (Apple Inc. build 5470)
(Aspen 5470.3)
The only "errors" I've are like libtool: file: hbwince.o has no

Where is your harbour.dylib created?
Also, could you try with make_tgz.sh to see if the sed/gzip
problem is present on your system, too?
[ I have to suspect that some of my errors are the
result of the multi-build (universal binary) run. But I think
Universal Binary is now a definite must on Macs, so
it'd be important to clear away any problems. ]
