I'm not following the mailing list closely enough. Without the COMSPEC trick 
here my cmd.exe freezes as soon as I issue a make install.

Please note that the COMSPEC trick was introduced several months ago and only 
recently removed during your optimizations of the gnu make build; this is to 
say, it is a problem which emerged long before your changes and due to the 1024 
(I think sometimes even less) max command line lenght of the OS/2 default 
command processor (cmd.exe)
