DX TIPS UNESCO: Let women make the news on 8 March: (24 February 05) UNESCO is calling media organisations producing daily news to hand over all editorial duties to their female editors and journalists on 8 March to mark "International Women's Day". Dubbed "Women Make the News", the global initiative seeks to encourage media organisations to promote fair representation of women by providing them with equal opportunities and improve the status of women journalists. Through this initiative, UNESCO hopes to create a greater understanding among media managers of what women bring to news organisations through their creative potential, intellectual capacities and leadership skills. UNESCO is also appealing to the media to increase coverage of issues concerning the need to appoint and elect an equal number of women and men as decision-makers according to the highest professional standards. "Women Make the News" will be launched next month by UNESCO Director-General Koichiro Matsuura for the fourth time. For more information, please refer to www.unesco.org/march8
Korea to allow hospital ads on radio and TV : (24 February 05) Hospitals and clinics in Korea will be allowed to run advertisements on television and radio from next year. The Korea Times quoted an official at the Ministry of Health and Welfare as saying: "We plan to prepare a revision bill in the first half of the year, and pass it at the ordinary session of the National Assembly. We'll scrap unnecessary regulations, leaving some restrictions only for exceptional cases." Current medical laws in Korea prohibit medical advertisements on television or radio and only allow hospitals to advertise in newspapers and magazines twice a month. Once the new law is enforced, hospitals and clinics are expected to actively engage in marketing their up-to-date operation methods and special medical instruments through mass media advertisements.
