Greetings from Italy!
On February 13, Marconi Radio International celebrates the? role of free
shortwave radio on the occasion of World Radio Day. That's why we have
produced, in cooperation with other two free radios of Italy, Radio Europe? and
IBC ? Italian Broadcasting Corporation, a special 1 hour show in Italian.
This day of celebration is also an opportunity to remember why we love free?
radio, to highlight the power of this medium to bring people together and to
share this with shortwave enthusiasts.
With this in mind, we invite SWLs? to listen? not only to Marconi Radio
International on 11390 kHz but also Italian Broadcasting Corporation on 6970
kHz and Radio Europe on 6875 kHz. These shortwave stations? will in fact carry
over the air, next Saturday at different times, that special programme which
includes interviews with people behind the operation of the three free radios.
As usual MRI, which this Saturday, 13 February 2016,? will be on the air from
09.00 to 14.00 UTC on 11390 kHz with 30 watts, encourages reception reports
from listeners. Audio clips (mp3-file) of our broadcasts? are welcome! We QSL

** ARGENTINA [non]. 7570, Monday Feb 8 in the 21-22 UT hour on WRMI, `La Rosa
de Tokio` is about radio in Catamarca province, which corresponds to this
week`s episode per publicity (altho it could be a rerun from months ago) (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** CYPRUS [non]. 9955, Wed Feb 11 at 1402, tune-in to WRMI for `FG Radio`, just
hearing one news item about North Korea missile. FG Radio ID and 1403 into a
couple songs, outroed as ``Comin` Inside So Strong``, a soulful protest; 1409
``repeating the headlines`` for 4 minutes, a lot more than I heard at the top:
NK satellite into space ``yesterday`` (it went up UT Sat Feb 6 circa 18 UT, so
FG Radio is old news already); Turkey too full of refugees; someone killed in
Cyprus fall; something up in UK; Zika virus risk; Dan Hicks dies. 1413 more
music and no outro until 1415 gh ID preceding WORLD OF RADIO (Glenn Hauser, OK,
DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** GUATEMALA [and non]. 4055, Feb 11 at 1334, R. Verdad has faded to a JBA
carrier as to be expected past sunrise here and there: no ``injexion`` of a
strong signal somehow as Dr Madrid thinx is being done in various places.
Ken Zichi suggests maybe this *could be* about carrier current, a very old, not
new technology, wherein a transmitter (normally on MW) is fed into powerlines
as antennas, nothing to do with computers. But that term has never been used in
describing this experiment. ``Injecting`` a signal would seem to fit, however.
With C.C., a radio within close range (before going thru various transformers),
plugged into AC would get the noisy and lo-fi signal. There is also a very
limited amount of radiation around the powerlines whether wanted or not. I
suppose a SW frequency could be used as well.
I myself was involved in C.C. college stations in the 60s ? KFRH at Forsyth
Residence Halls, Washington University, St Louis MO (IIRC on 570 between real
stations KSD 550 and WRTH 590); it`s mentioned in the Wikipedia article about
successor KWUR 90.3 FM.
And later, at KNMD, 880, (New Mexico Dorms), UNM in Albuquerque. Searching for
that is obscured by the calls now applying to a digital TV relay in Santa Fe of
KNME. KNMD was the predecessor of KUNM now 89.9, an excellent public radio
station; see Wikipedia about KUNM.
Carrier current is similar to ``Rediffusion`` or ``wired broadcasting`` which
was used in the early-to-mid XX century in places of limited extent such as
Malta; in Russian cities in order to restrict and control what citizens could
listen to; and probably still in North Korea. Some of this may have `injected`
signals on MW radio frequencies rather than simply being a wired-loudspeaker
network.
Getting back to Guatemala, if this magical technology is really carrier-current
injexion, that could be done anywhere, modulated by any source off webcasts,
but it would be extremely inefficient and of limited range (Glenn Hauser, OK,

** INDIA. 4970+, Feb 11 at 1330, S8 carrier, same past 1333, so apparently AIR
Shillong, slightly on hi side, rather than the CNR1 jamming which has been here
for weeks by mistake instead of blocking BBC Uzbek on 4790 at 1300-1330 only,
as reported by Ron Howard. If we could get it better than this, like Ron, we
could be hearing Hindi/English coverage of the XII South Asian Games until Feb
16, pre-empting regular programming including Delhi news at 1530, as I quote
him on WOR 1812 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** KASHMIR [non]. 7030-AM, Feb 11 at 1319, very poor signal S5, with talk, and
music so sure sounds like a broadcast station; however some of the talk could
have been a very weak phone LSB ham (XE?) riding in on that carrier; but at
1325 I can hear the modulation on USB setting. Presumably V. of Jammu & Kashmir
Freedom Movement, as IDed last month by Japanese DXers and Mauno Ritola; tnx to
S. Hasegawa, Jan 15 & 28 between *1310v and 1430*v. Ron Howard had it Jan 31 at
1354, but Feb 1 only until 1347*. In Communication of the British DX Club, Tony
Rogers reported it Jan 29 from 1430 to 1445* clearly mentioning ``7.230 MHz``
[in English?] at sign-off, so maybe they are mis-punching the frequency,
temporarily?
WRTH 2016 pp. 510-511 says this comes out of a R. Pakistan, Islamabad
transmitter, address in Muzaffarabad, but it was then on 3995 at 1300-1430
daily in Kashmiri/Urdu, irregular and times variable.
7120-AM, Feb 11 at 1324 also bears a JBA carrier, presumably R. Hargeisa,
Somaliland via long-path supposedly in English at this time (Glenn Hauser, OK,
DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** KOREA NORTH [non]. 4885, Feb 10 at 1355, song, and 1400 Korean announcement;
Echo of Hope from the SOUTH is the SSOB now at S9+10, better than Australia on
4835. No jamming audible (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MEXICO. 650, Feb 11 at 1259 UT, full ID for XHTNT, Radio 65, 106.5, and
XETNT; 650, 1300 short version of NA, only about a minute, got that out of the
way! (Some Mexican stations have sued to get the requirement lifted). Further
IDs for Radio Viva and Noticiero AltaVoz.com, the programming now about ag
affairs, from Los Mochis, Sinaloa. Could also make out a weak // from XEGS
Guasave on 610 under KCSP. XETNT is a sunrise regular here, heard many other
times without bothering to relog (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** MEXICO. 670, Feb 11 at 1258, ma?anitas, i.e. that catchy song along with
local birthday greetings; 1300 full ID for Torre?n, Radio Ranchito, Grupo Radio
M?xico, i.e. XETOR, 1000/250 watts. Had to null Caddo Country from Arkansas,
but no problem from WSCR Chicago, roughly opposite from Coahuila (Glenn Hauser,
OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** NIGERIA [and non]. 15115-15120-15125, Feb 11 at 1905, DRM noise, presumably
from V. of Nigeria active today (Ivo Ivanov had reported the 18-20 UT DRM
English broadcast inactive as late as Feb 6).
However, beware: at other dayparts another station DRMs circa 15120: roger in
Germany has heard 15120, AIR Bengaluru circa 0800 UT Feb 6 carrying two
services in DRM: Hindi, and the new Raagam classical music channel just
launched on Republic Day Jan 26, 2016. That`s an extension of the 0315-0530
double-DRM broadcast in various languages per Aoki (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** OKLAHOMA. 890, Thu Feb 11 at 1530 UT, I`m checking whether KTLR OKC is still
partly in Spanish, as on their program schedule grid: Yes, praise music in
Spanish, 1538 UT predicating (preaching) in Spanish (Glenn Hauser, Enid, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** SOUTH CAROLINA [non]. 21675, Feb 8 circa 1443 UT check, very poor WRMI
signal, but sounds like Brother Scare instead of Radio Africa Network. RAN
supposedly carries BS until 1400, then own programming. Ivo Ivanov later
confirms it`s still BS on 21675 past 1500 and 1600. Mistake or replacement? By
the time I check Feb 9 at 1947, 21675 is back to non-BS programming. BTW, some
days after 2200 they run old-time-radio secular episodes (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX
LISTENING DIGEST)
** TAIWAN [and non]. 11499.925 approx., Feb 11 at 1435, very poor signal in

somewhat more than that. Yet being off-frequency, more likely this than a CNR1
jammer. At 1437 brief QRM from US-military sounding SSB, how copy? Probably

** TURKEY [and non]. 12035, Feb 11 at 1425, TRT IS is only S5-S9, as I`m
comparing it unfavorably to Yemen [non] on 11860, so I stay tuned a while to
see if they make the QSY in time today. 1426 ID in presumed Kazakh, the next
language after 1330 English; off at 1427* so I retune to 9785 to find a very
weak algo, until *1428 VOT cuts on about a minute after leaving 12035, resuming
IS at only S4-S8, with SAH from the understation, which per Aoki is CNR8 Korean
service, 100 kW, 63 degrees from Beijing site (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING

** U S A. 3843-LSB, Feb 11 at 0710, nothing happening here where some nights
there had been phone-patch reports from the Burns OR standoff. This was just
after news broke that the intruders had agreed to surrender later today (and
after I had recorded WORLD OF RADIO 1812 about this, saying there had been no

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1811 monitoring: I haven`t checked every
evening for the new 0030 UT airing on WBCQ 9330v-CUSB --- but I should: UT Wed
Feb 10 at 0030 a JBA carrier, exciter? Only at *0032 does an S9 signal cut on
9330.07 with WOR two minutes in progress. Altho peaking S9 on the meter it`s
hardly a strong signal to the ears.
Next check for the Feb 10 Wed 1415 airing on WRMI 9955: as usual gh ID fires
about 1415, and WOR play starts at 1415:33, good. Also confirmed Wed Feb 10 at
2200 on WBCQ at about 7490.018-AM, and probably drifting slowly downward. Also
barely confirmed at 0030 UT Thu Feb 11 on WBCQ 9330v-CUSB, but tonight it`s
just barely audible, apparently at whims of the MUF, but overall should be
improving as the sun sets later and later.
WORLD OF RADIO 1812 monitoring: confirmed first SW broadcast underway at 1233
UT Thu Feb 11 check on WRMI 9955, good but with pulse jamming; tnx a lot,
Arnie! How would you like it if the Yanquis jammed your DX program, either
deliberately or thru negligence? The fortunate Cubans have never needed to
worry about that, tnx to American ideals.
Also confirmed Thu Feb 12 at 2100 on WRMI 7570, but only a poor signal (while
15770 with other programming is much better now, as we have crossed the
threshold of LUHF trumping azimuth --- 7570 is aimed right at us but getting
more and more absorbed, yet 15 MHz aimed sidewise overcomes by being closer to
the MUF). Next:

fill-music which was being heard a few days ago in the 13-15 apparent gap in
TOM usage (and of course, immediately outdating what I said about that on WOR

** YEMEN [non]. 11860, Feb 10 at 1417, R. Sana`a with loud ME music at S9+20;
1424 ``Allahu Akhbar``, and a brief speech with echo effect, background music,
mentions Adan; 1425 back to music, song.
11860, Feb 11 at 1410, R. Sana`a, very good S9+20 in Arabic, mostly talk
instead of music today, M&M studio conversation past 1424. From *1430 lite QRM
from IBB KUWAIT underneath, which has stuck to its original frequency for
Afghanistan despite this Yemeni business nearby. By 1456, now martial music,
1501 talk and still no call-to-prayer in next few minutes.
Since I have such strong signals here in deep North America, Kai Ludwig wonders
if I have considered whether the site could really be on this side of the pond?
Not really. Hard to believe the ousted Yemeni president would go this far away,
whence the signal into Yemen would be quite weaker than from e.g. neighboring
Saudi Arabia.
But only two sites would be remotely conceivable --- Greenville and Cypress
Creek. It`s even harder to imagine IBB itself serving as site under deep cover
(especially with the Kuwait clash). WRMI might have the capacity if Brother
Scare hadn`t bought out 10 of the transmitters, and this signal is stronger
than WRMI itself on 11825, e.g. There is little else to compare it with on 25m
in the 1330-1530 UT period when Sana`a is strongest here. Feb 11 at 1425, I
find Turkey [q.v.] only S5-S9 on 12035, and it`s overtly aimed at us!
WHRI might be possible, via one of its 500 kW transmitters, and no doubt would
be open to such covert business, as they have no problem with overtly relaying
Commies such as Voice of Vietnam; carry other clandestines via Palau, and
remember the one for Fiji from SC?
But if a US site, why would the 11860 signal gradually fade down and out after
1530? (Unless: a site swap before another one circa 1753). I am more inclined
to think the 11860 I hear happens to be on a favorable azimuth beyond Yemen
from Saudi or some other neighboring country, perhaps carrying on to here by
long path across the Indian and Pacific oceans (or very efficiently radiating
off-the-back --- but Wolfy is repeatedly reporting how poor the signal is in

UNIDENTIFIED. 880, Feb 11 at 1850 UT on caradio, KRVN Nebraska, usual
groundwave daytimer, has CCI from another talker in English. Closest 4
possibilities: IL and TX are listed as Spanish; 10 kW KHAC NM/AZ is partly
English but far for groundwave. 50 kW KLRG AR is considerably closer, but AR
has poor conductivity for GW. No daytime skywave noted now on prime channels
720, 840. Hoping to pull more out of this on the NRD-545 at home with loop
