Yes, the FCC has blown it several times in recent years. They seem to have
trouble with states that start with M because there are so many. From what I
was told, somebody mistook MS for being Missouri instead of Mississippi. There
was new TV station that was granted a K call, but they ended up changing it to
a W before it went on the air. Undoubtedly, the same thing happened with the
AM station in Michigan that was given a K call. The person who did it must
have thought MI stood for Missouri or Minnesota, but the station still operates
with the K call. About 10 years ago there were two new FM stations in Iowa
that were granted W calls, but the FCC found out about that before they were
built and made them change to K calls.

It was moved from Chicago in 1926, so it’s grandfathered.
I know several Mississippi stations.... licensed to towns in MS... that have
had K call letters granted in the last 15 years

The original call sign for this station was KQYX, but it was changed to WMBH
in 2001. Doesn't anyone at the FCC ever look at a map? Why would a station in
Joplin qualify for a W call???

Been chasing a sports station under KNZR and KGOW for a week or two but could
never nail it down as there were two possibilities and I couldnt rule either
one out based on location. Finally heard a mention of Joplin in a radio
commercial tonight.
