Experimental Radio News #9 and #10 contain a lot of news on the shortwave data
transmission industry and its continuing attempts to utilize the short wave
bands. Some have even been allowed the privilege of not transmitting an ID
according to EXPERIMENTAL NEWS. Anyway, it?s worth a read, and it?s free.

** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, Feb 21 at 2057 tune-in via Argentine
remote, LRA36 already on air with music; advance publicity of a test
today at 21-22; perhaps at a time earlier than 23 for convenience of
Europeans. It`s S7 with roar, which stops at 2100 for s/on in the
clear, then multi-lingual LRA36 ID, songs; 2105 & 2111 multi-lingual
RAE IDs instead. Aside from those, seems all-music. They are asking
for reports and evaluating quality. No signal direct at 2136 check and
not further monitored as it`s nap-time.

I can`t blame RAE for involving with this, but continues to raise the
question of why can`t they get back on air with new/powerful SW
transmitter(s) in the real Argentina? Not that we`re eager to hear
more from the wacko new government (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** BRAZIL. 15415, Feb 21 at 2314, JBA carrier, presumably temporary
reactivation of ZYE955 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15230, Feb 21 at 2318, S9+10 but breaking-up, or -in just
barely modulation. Something`s always wrong at RHC. The Other Side:

``Is there a humanitarian crisis in Cuba? In DIARIO DE CUBA, three
experts discuss the aptness of the term to describe the situation on
the island. --- Yusim? Rodr?guez L?pez, Madrid 19 Feb 2024 - 22:17
CET``
https://diariodecuba.com/cuba/1708377460_52964.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9439.995v, Feb 21 at 2125 into UTwente, no signal from R.
Cairo. I have been checking this almost every day during the English
sesquihour, but always nothing as it`s apparently totally off the air
while supposedly making repairs to Something`s Amiss at Abis (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** GERMANY [non]. 15215, Feb 21 at 1527, JBA signal here which would
be KSDA Guam in Kannada, 1530 Hindi. Recheck direct at 1559* just as
that goes off. 1600 still no signal from R. ??mrang (Amrum), annual
hour via FRANCE. Cuts on late at *1600:50 VG S9/+15 but just barely
modulated! 1606 I bring up Maryland SDR to find it also S9/+15 and JBM
but somewhat readable by turning volume way up. There is also
continuous weaker clatter underneath, OTHR? It`s all in German or
maybe Frisian bits until 1623 ID in English. Brief English segments
explaining what`s being discussed, 1635 mentions WW II, also at 1642,
1654. 1637 recheck direct, still JBM unreadable. 1640 German ID with
frequency, contact info, 1641 same in English, 500 kW. 1643 YL voice
and others with background noises. 1657 full ID in English as R.
Amrum, starts German but chopped off air incomplete at 1658*. A few
years ago something went wrong with this and there was a make-good a
few days later. They should be entitled to that again, with normal
modulation! For this traditional once-a-year event, you`d think TDF
would make sure to get it right the first time. With this and other
monitored problems, why would anyone risk buying time on Issoudun?
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 27185 AM, Feb 21 at 2313, CB skip pileup while no local
relay of K288FX gospel music from 105.5. You never know if or when
this will happen nor which station will be relayed. This appeared on
HCDX at 2138 UT Feb 21, as if in reply to my previous inquiry, but
avoid being explicit about that: ``27185 khz AM checked frequently on
February 19 & 20. No music noted among the considerable CB skip. Bill
Smith, Douglas, MA`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. Tropo up Feb 21, Enid on western edge of blobs as
predicted by
https://tropo.f5len.org/north-america/north-america-west-coast/
We are hardly on the west coast but this is the map including OK area
and almost as far east as the Mississippi River. -- while the APRS
maps I habitually checked first have been blank for several days
worldwide! Do others see them that way? https://vhf.dxview.org/
A third VG site is predictive only:
https://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo.html

I start DTV STB tuning at 1625 UT and find many BAD signals on `open`
hi-VHF and UHF channels. Local K17JN-D, mislabeled ``K17JI-D``, is BAD
due to DX QRM, presumably full-power KTEN Ada. Only decodes are RF 20
KQCW 19-1 Muskogee/Tulsa mkt, and TBN-HD, no further ID, on RF 36.
Checking FCC TV Query, that is surely KDOR Bartlesville. Both fade by
1700.

BTW I see in rabbitears.info that K17JN-D listing has still not been
updated with my latest monitored info which I also sent directly to
`Trip` -- wonder if he would rather not be contradicted? I continue to
find his website invaluable, except for this (Glenn Hauser, Enid,
WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690: Reply to my Feb 19 log of SNR English closing with
song ``La Flaca``: ``Hello Glenn, I heard the same program on REE
yesterday and just saw your log in the IO group. I remember buying the
Jarabe de Palo (medicine from Palo?) CD back in 1996. The name of
their first album was La Flaca, the skinny girl, I presume. It
actually has some really good acoustic and harder rock songs on it.
It's been a long time favorite of mine.

I even remember being at a baseball game in Ciudad Obreg?n, M?xico
around 2003 and they were playing Jarabe de Palo on the speaker system
in between innings. I started singing along and my Mexican work
colleagues were quite amazed that I knew who Jarabe de Palo was. I was
very saddened yesterday to learn that the lead singer had died. He had
a really great voice. Regards, Chris Campbell, Columbus, Ohio`` (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Wed Feb 21 at 2300, token English from SNR, initially
sufficient on DX-390 with a few meters clipped-on. Preview topic to be
about the European Cyber-Security Act, required by increasing
cyber-attacks. 2301 news; 2306 feature. 2307 signal fades down
considerably. That correlates very nicely with this from SWPC a few
minutes later:

``Space Weather Message Code: SUMX01

Potential Impacts: Area of impact consists of large portions of the
sunlit side of Earth, strongest at the sub-solar point. Radio - Wide
area blackout of HF (high frequency) radio communication for about an
hour.`` Well, it was certainly not totally blacked out here for an
hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 5960.003, Feb 21 at 2311, JBA carrier direct and
a slightly stronger JBA carrier on 9610; which is VOT? By 2334 I check
UTwente, when measured. VOT 5960 is VG S9+40, something else on 9610
presumably China, unlike yesterday. 2340 weekly report about
something. I refuse to strain to try to understand what the badax is
saying; besides, I`m mainly attentive to BBC World News America on
OETA 13/13. 2351, two-minute multi-lingual ID filler reel. 2354, s/off
for 1330 broadcast only. 2354.6, IS starts. 2355.3* chop off air
uncovering XJRTV in Chinese, std genocidal denunciations (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2230 monitoring: ``From: Richard
Lemke, St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, the desk of Richard?s listening
Post, Radio: JRC NRD-535 HF, Antenna: random long wires in the trees.
Dear Glenn: Update, confirming WOR #2230, WRMI:
5850, 0144, 0145, 0159 (55444), 0159, February 17 UTC 2024 [Sat]
9395, 0030, 0045, 0058 (4-55433),(55433), 0059, February 21 [Wed]
(Lemke, Richard -AB)``

Confirmed UT Wednesday February 21 at 0030 on WRMI 9395, S6/S8 into
Missouri SDR.

Also confirmed Wednesday February 21 at 1525 the secret 1500 on WRMI
9955, S9/S5 direct.

Also confirmed Wednesday February 21 at 2053 the 2030 on SW Radio,
Germany, 3975.001, S9/+10 into UTwente.

In order not to interrupt my nap, I started recording WBCQ 7490- via
Maryland SDR for half an hour from 2132, as `Pirate Joe Extravaganzo`
was underway OK. However I later find that he was cut to dead air at
2159, no ID and no WOR for at least a couple minutes. My next check
was direct-only at 2227 with reception so bad that I could not be sure
my voice could be heard then, either. Did anyone notice what happened
during the entire semihour? Next:

0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S
0230 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
1730 UT Thursday SW Radio, Germany 3975

As noncommercial services, financial support appreciated. Thanks this

** YEMEN [non]. Wolfgang Bueschel quotes my report and inserts
additional info which I did *not* say, such as Riyadh site. I don`t
know whether it`s Jeddah but am willing to accept his info: but
beware, I didn`t say that! Likewise ``excile radio`` as it`s spelt
exile:

``SAUDI ARABIA {Saudi army target radio and non YEMEN excile radio} --

fective Sa'udi transmitter for {excile} Republic of Yemen Radio. Even

audio in the mush with USB tuning. Something's sorry in Riyadh Sa'udi

signal on excile radio of 'Republic of Yemen Radio' via Riyadh
broadcast center. 27 x major 120 Hertz distance audio strings visible
in audio block range 11818.400 to 11821.770 kHz and minor strong

kHz RBW 15.3 Hertz] (wb df5sx, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews Febr 21)``

11820, Feb 21 at 2319 another check direct, same horrible buzz but in
AM mode, traces of some music (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED [and non]. More intriguing ND beacon carriers at least vs
noise level:
251 kHz, Feb 21 at 0644 UT, probably 100-watt AM, Amarillo TX, heard
before.
305 kHz, Feb 21 at 0645, probably 150-watt RO, Roswell NM, heard
before; only one other USA listed, OI, 25 watts in Sioux City IA.
326 kHz, Feb 21 at 0646, I do make out an ID as MA, which is 400 watts
from MidlAnd TX; but tuned to 324 USB where nothing is listed (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)
