            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

We've talked a lot about the Bush administration laying out the case against Saddam
and for that cutesy phrase "regime change" but tonight we'll look at the other
side...What's Iraq doing diplomatically and militarily to stave off an impending
attack? Yesterday, Iraq's Veep met with Syrian officials and Iraq's foreign minister
met with, get this, the Chinese Vice Premier who said relations between the two
countries were "extremely friendly"...We'll talk to Brookings Institute guy Michael
O'Hanlon and the U. of Maryland's Shibley Telhami...

It used to be "Where in the world is Matt Lauer"? Now it's "Where in the world is
Osama bin Laden"? The New York Times reports today that bin Laden is kicking it (slang
for hanging out) "somewhere on a 250-mile stretch of the border between Afghanistan
and Pakistan."...Also, Iran is said to be harboring some top Al-Qaeda cats...We'll get
into it with Philip Smucker from the Christian Science Monitor (who was over in
Afghanistan during the war) and Yossef of course...

The D block debate will be over the United Nations' World Summit on Sustainable
Development in Johannesburg...Is Bush right to not send Colin Powell or are these
international conferences simply a platform for anti-American bashing? Arnaud de
Borchgrave of The Center for Strategic and International Studies will join the
debate...

Some of the Real Deal topics include: Did an impeding war with Iraq cause DC to lose
the bid to host the Olympics?...Plus, 'N Sync dude Lance Bass needs $20 million to go
to space and the Ruskies ain't sending him up until he ponies up...

Buzz topics are still up in the air but I'll have the Zinni and Armitage comments re:
Iraq on standby...Tony Blankley of the Washington Times and Jim Warren of the Chicago
Tribune will join us...

And pls do check out our TV homepage...One I'm sure you've never experienced
before...Lots of clickable fun to be had here http://www.tv.msnbc.com

DC...Perhaps the weather is better in Cambridge these days...

Interesting to see Armitage out on Iraq as he is widely considered to be in Powell's
"circumspect camp" on an invasion: U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage
said on Wednesday that Washington was confident it could convince skeptical allies to
back military action against Iraq, and would be "moving forward" at the right time.
