Things are heating up in Minnesota as Wellstone's memorial service turns into a
Democrat party rock concert...Did you see when Bill, Hill & Mondale entered the hall?
The place went nuts...Trent Lott was booed...Iowa Senator Tom Harkin as well as
Wellstone's sons gave rousing speeches...Some exhorted the crowd to win the Senate
race in Paul's honor...Republicans are crying foul, Dems say that's the way Paul would
have wanted it...Jesse was so upset he left the service early and vowed to appoint an
Independent to fill the seat until a successor is sworn in...

We'll get reax from both sides tomorrow night and will be going heavy on election 2002
coverage from now until next week...Plans for our coverage are being hatched as I
write...

Last night Mortman kicked it to the Comedy Central Soiree last night and filed this
report...

Extreme Mortman: Oh, the huge slices of succulent roast beef. Oh, the monstrous hunks
of chicken tenders. Oh, the Chernobyl-sized slices of smoked salmon. Your tireless
Brieifing reporter cruised Comedy Central's "Daily Show with John Stewart" party last
night at DC's Irish pub Fado, despite the rain and potential parking headaches. In
the end, there was rain but no parking headaches -- the only headache being the
hangover induced by pints of Guiness and mugs of Irish Coffee -- topped off by a 7:30
a.m. shuttle flight bringing your loyal Briefing reporter to Secaucus for election
night prep meetings

Mondale: "It is with a heavy heart but a great hope for the future that I will pick up
the campaign where Paul Wellstone left off,"

Thousands gather to honor Wellstone...Thousands of people gathered Tuesday to honor
Sen. Paul Wellstone, the outspoken Democrat who was killed in a plane crash last week
along with his wife, daughter and five others.

Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura, upset by what he felt was a partisan tone of a memorial
service to honor the late Sen. Paul Wellstone, said he will try to appoint an
independent instead of a Democrat to fill Wellstone's seat until a new candidate is
certified. (AP)

More on that memorial service last night...

..much of the night was upbeat, raucous and sometimes acidly partisan, a campaign
rally that left some Republicans and other non-DFLers squirming. (Minneapolis Star
Tribune) http://www.startribune.com/stories/1752/3397942.html

"Let's all get on that bus together - that green bus!'' shouted Sen. Tom Harkin,
D-Iowa, as the crowd at Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota - including
former President Bill Clinton and half the U.S. Senate - roared its approval. "That
bus of hope! Let's keep moving to a better America!" "Keep standing up and keep
fighting! And keep saying yes! To justice! To hope! For people! For Paul! For Paul!''
(St. Paul Pioneer Press) http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/4399539.htm

"What a complete, total, absolute sham," said Vin Weber, a former U.S. representative
from Minnesota. "The DFL clearly intends to exploit Wellstone's memory totally,
completely and shamelessly for political gain. To them, Wellstone's death, apparently,
was just another campaign event." (Minneapolis Star Tribune)
http://www.startribune.com/stories/1752/3398117.html

Wellstone's likely replacement on the ballot, former Vice President Walter Mondale,
leads Republican Norm Coleman by 47 to 39 percent -- close to where the race stood two
weeks ago when Wellstone led Coleman 47 to 41 percent. (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

Republican Elizabeth Dole once again enlisted the weight of the Bush administration,
while Democrat Erskine Bowles looked to a higher authority as both U.S. Senate
candidates campaigned furiously across North Carolina on Tuesday. (Raleigh News &

Radio talk-show hosts are setting up shop on the White House lawn today to interview
Cabinet secretaries and top administration officials. Democrats say President Bush is
using his office to give Republicans an unfair edge six days before elections. (USA
Today) http://www.usatoday.com/usatonline/20021030/4576133s.htm

The Republican and Democratic parties are on a pace to raise a record amount of the
loosely regulated cash this year, before it is banned Nov. 6 by a new campaign-finance
law. They appear likely to eclipse the $495 million raised in 2000. That's a
remarkable development, because there is no presidential race to attract big
contributors, as there was two years ago. (USA Today)
