            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

Yeah we didn't have Hitchens on Friday...Sorry 'bout that...Long story short, he's on
tonight...We're going with a big picture, big gun panel with Hitchens, Beschloss, &
Arnett...We'll lead off with Iraq, the UN resolution, where we go from here and maybe
throw in a little Dems in disarray...We'll probably sprinkle in some other folks as
well...We're talking major gravitas with personality and Chris' attitude thrown in to
spice it up...

Remember that CIA drone missile strike in Yemen last week that killed the suspected
Al-Qaeda dudes? Amnesty International doesn't think that was cool and they've fired
off a letter to President Bush slamming this "extrajudicial" justice....So did the
killing violate international law or was it a legitimate act of a war? We'll get into
it with Arnaud de Borchgrave who says it was legit...Still working on the other side...

In the e/f buzz we've got a special treat...Mike Barnicle will interview Chris about
his new book "American: Beyond our Grandest Notions"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0743240863/qid=1037036084/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/002-3526865-4122445?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

Chris explores what it means to be American, uniquely American personality
characteristics, sensibilities and timeless qualities in our national character...Why
are we reluctant warriors? Why do we always root for the underdog? Why are we
optimistic? What makes us rebellious? He explores these traits through popular culture
icons such as Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, Bogie in Casablanca, Rocky, Shane, Wayne, Jimmy
Stewart, Jay Gatsby & others...Real cool stuff...

Speaking of the new book, last night was Chris' big book party at the American City
Diner (a classic retro '50's style eatery)....Attendees noshed on cheeseburgers, BBQ
potato chips and bottled Cokes while Chris beamed like kid on Christmas morning,
signing books and schmoozing the crowd...A reel of scenes from the movies the book
makes references to played on a big movie screen in the front patio of the
diner...Chris' beautiful queen/Channel 7 anchor Kathleen stood at the door greeting
folks....Some notable faces in the crowd: MSNBC chief Erik Sorensen, Christopher
Hitchens and his lovely wife Carol Blue, Howard Fineman and family, Howard and Beth
Mortman, Bill Press, Pat Buchanan, Ben Bradlee & Sally Quinn, Ann Klenk, Norah,
Campbell, CNN's Kelly Wallace, actor Ed Begley Jr., Time's Margaret Carlson, Team
Washington's David Shuster, Christina Jamison, Kerri Forrest, Hardball master VO
cutter EJ Johnson, ABC's John Cochran & Ann Compton, Arnaud de Borchgraveand, Channel
7's Alexandra Steele & Doug McKelway....Lloyd, where were you?

The Hellfire missile strike launched by a CIA-operated drone that killed a top al
Qaida militant and five others in a car in Yemen on Sunday may not have violated the
U.S. ban on assassinations, but the Bush administration's new rules on America's right
to self-defense in the uncertain battlefield of the war on terrorism need to be
sharply defined, according to former intelligence officials and experts (UPI)

Amnesty release: Amnesty International has today written to the President of the
United States, George Bush, to express its deep concern at reports that the six men
