Briefing from Washington, DC
So NBC Newschannel, which provides Washington news for NBC's owned and operated
entitites and is home of the Hardball staff, is FINALLY in the Metropolitan
Media League softball playoffs. Yes, it's been many years and many, well, less
than stellar seasons, but we finished this season 11-5 and are the number 8
seed in the championship tournament this weekend!! Rivals include Fox, CNN,
townhall.com among others...
What you likely didn't know is that one of the team's stars is Hardball's very
own David Shuster (don't tell him we told you it's his birthday today), who is
one of the best outfielders and hitters in the league. And in keeping with the
team Shuster/ Jamison theme, producer Christina Jamison plays too...
Check out our scouting report! We'll give you the full weekend report on
Monday. And yes, we thought of the "wow, the Hardball staff plays softball on
weekends" line too... It was just too obvious.

Commish Sez: After years of getting beat like the MMSL's redheaded stepchild,
the Peacocks made a glorious run for their first playoff berth. It's the kind
of reward you like to see for teams with a small player draw that can barely
field a squad many weeks because of breaking work assignments . . . Began the
year 4-0 before hitting slump, then finished off by winning 6 in a row,
including some quality wins against Comcast SportsNet, Discovery Channel, ABC
News and AP . . . Emerges from difficult division race so they're not exactly
flukes despite some "soft" wins from the lower tier of the league . . . Feels
confident because of wins against WRC and CNN . . . Horrid offensive rank;
tremendous defensive ability . . . SS Todd Sutton is very steady and a dynamite
clutch hitter . . . LC David Shuster is a league veteran (CNN, Fox News) who
has few peers in the MMSL as an all-around player. He's one of the four best
defensive outfielders . . . Have-Glove-Will-Travel Christina Jamison is so
critical to this team because she can play about any position competently. A
coach's daughter, she's better than quite a few of our men players . . . The
full-squad Peacocks have proven they can play with the upper half of the
league, but very few teams actually have their full squads all the time. P Matt
Tureck and 1b Chris Wiggins are possibly away to cover the Shuttle launch.
Humongous losses . . . Look, don't get big eyes and look too far ahead. No
pressure, enjoy the experience. Have a great time. Soak in the aura. Celebreate
your season. The fate of 99 percent of first-year entrants to the playoffs
likely awaits you. Ask WTTG.

NBC News Channel Predicts to Win the Championship (other than itself):
Washington Times--"Even though we're a mch better team now, the times we have
played them before they have blown us out. They have great hitters and a super
defense." Sean Sedam
