The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
This past Saturday, Vice President Cheney accidentally shot a fellow hunter on
a private ranch in Texas. That man, 78-year-old attorney Harry Whittington, is
resting comfortably in a Corpus Christi area hospital today. But there are a
lot of questions today in Washington about when the White House knew that the
vice president was the shooter, why the vice president's office didn't tell the
press about what happened until a local newspaper asked for confirmation that
it occurred, and why the vice president didn't personally talk to the president
about what had happened until today. The White House press briefing today was
contentious to say the least. Here's a link to a transcript of that:

And here's MSNBC's full report on the story:

Tonight on Hardball, Chris will talk with NBC News' Chief Foreign Affairs
Correspondent Andrea Mitchell, Jaime Powell, a reporter for the Corpus Christi
Caller-Times, and Jim VandeHei of the Washington Post about today's
developments and the gradual piecing together of what took place. Hardball's
David Shuster will recap what has developed in the last 48 hours.
Former Sen. Alan Simpson (R-WY), a close friend of the vice president who has
hunted with him, also will be here to talk about what happened.
Plus, MSNBC political analysts Pat Buchanan and Ron Reagan will discuss the
lingering questions from White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan's briefing
today. They'll also ponder DNC Chairman Howard Dean's edict that the vice
president should resign if he did tell his then chief of staff, Scooter Libby,
to leak intelligence information to the press, as the National Journal reported
last Friday.
Also tonight, Chris will talk with three veterans of the Iraq War who are
running for Congress: West Virginia Republican Senate candidate Hiram Lewis,
Pennsylvania Democratic House candidate Patrick Murphy, and Texas Republican
House candidate Van Taylor. Did their service inspire them to run? Will the war
be the main issue of 2006? Do veterans hailing from different parties have any
common ground on how the war is going? Don't miss it!
