            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

It's now just three days until the Hardball election team and MSNBC.com land in
Memphis, Tenn., for the Southern Republican Leadership Conference. Potential
2008 contenders like Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN), Sen.
George Allen (R-VA), Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA), and Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR)
will all be there along with other GOP biggies like Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS),
Gov. Haley Barbour (R-MS), and Sen. David Vitter (R-LA). It's the first major
stop in a long journey to the nomination. Who will make a splash? Will anyone
sink? What will the party luminaries talk about and what will people be saying
about them?

As Chris gets ready for Memphis, tonight on Hardball (at 5, 7, and 11 p.m.
Eastern) we have two of the sharpest shooters in politics, MSNBC Political
Analyst Pat Buchanan and Hardball Political Analyst Bob Shrum, to discuss the
political winds in the air that could blow into Tennessee for the big shindig.
They'll also talk about the new Washington Post/ABC News poll that gauges the
popularity of 2008 frontrunners McCain and Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY). Read
more about the poll here in the Post:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/03/06/AR2006030600369.html.

Charlie Cook, NBC political analyst and publisher of the Cook Political Report,
also will be here to talk about 2008, the latest polls, and the upcoming
midterm elections. Check out Cook's latest column on 2008 here:
http://www.cookpolitical.com/.

Plus, Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) will join Chris tonight to talk about Iraq and
what Americans think about how things are going there. The Washington Post/ABC
News poll found that 80 percent think that the current violence makes a civil
war in Iraq more likely.

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, and Kim Gandy,
president of the National Organization for Women, also will be here to talk
about the new abortion ban law in South Dakota and what that could mean for the
rest of the country. Check out Perkins' and Gandy's statements, respectively,
here: http://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=PR06C02 and
http://www.now.org/press/03-06/03-06.html.

Chris also will talk about the state of the recovery from Hurricane Katrina and
future disaster preparedness with former FEMA Director James Lee Witt.
Governors from states hit by the storm testified in Washington, D.C., today in
favor of more emergency funding. Read about that here:
