The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
Three years ago today, President Bush famously stood beneath a banner that said
"Mission Accomplished" on the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln. Today, roughly
as many troops are in the country as were there three years ago. Over the
weekend, former Sec. of State Colin Powell told a British television audience
that he recommended more troops prior to the March 2003 invasion of Iraq. On
Sunday, Powell's successor, Sec. of State Condoleezza Rice, said she couldn't
remember Powell specifically recommending that and that the president's
decisions were based on the advice of his military commanders. Here's more on
that from the AP: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nation/3831009.html.
Tonight on Hardball, Chris is back and talking with Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA),
who says we cannot have an open-ended commitment in Iraq. Kennedy, author of a
new book called "America Back on Track," will be here to talk about the future
of Iraq as well as gas prices, the midterms, and the massive immigrant rights
protests taking place today across the country. Kennedy is co-sponsoring an
illegal immigration plan with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), but will their plan
succeed in Congress? Here's more about the senator's book:

In case you missed it, Kennedy's colleague Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) co-authored an
op-ed in today's New York Times calling for decentralizing the new Iraqi
government into regions controlled separately by Kurds, Sunnis, and Shiites and
connected by a central Baghdad government. Here's Biden's pitch:

Hardball Correspondent David Shuster will have the latest on the CIA leak
probe, including Ambassador Joe Wilson and wife Valerie Plame's appearance at
the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner this past Saturday -- their
first in public together! Today's Washington Post has more on the boldface
names socializing this past Saturday (including insight from Hardball's own Ann
Klenk!):

White House Communications Director Nicolle Wallace also will join Chris
tonight to talk about the latest changes on the White House staff and the
future of the U.S. presence in Iraq. Check out the AP's report on what the
president said today: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12577894/
Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) and Dr. Gabriela Lemus, director of policy and
legislation for the League of United Latin American Citizens, will debate the
ongoing immigration fight on Capitol Hill highlighted today by the nationwide
walkout protest. Read MSNBC's report on today's "Day Without Immigrants":

spokesman Tony Snow:
