            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

President Bush made a surprise visit to Baghdad today to meet with new Iraqi
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and other leaders of Iraq's government. The
president was scheduled to be at Camp David today for more meetings on Iraq
with his advisers, but news broke this morning that he had secretly left last
night to get to Iraq today. He also took time to talk to the troops. Read more
about the trip and the secret plans to get there:

Meanwhile, back here in the U.S., Karl Rove is reportedly off the hook. Special
Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald let Rove's lawyer know last night that Rove would
not be charged in the CIA leak probe. Here's more on that:

NBC News' Senior Investigative Correspondent Lisa Myers will have more on
Fitzgerald's decision to clear Rove. By the way, MSNBC.com's Tom Curry has more
on Rove's relief: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9831319/.

Newsweek's Michael Isikoff, Slate.com's John Dickerson, and the Washington
Post's Jim VandeHei will also join Chris to talk about the Rove news. Plus,
MSNBC Political Analyst Pat Buchanan and Hardball Political Analyst Bob Shrum
will be here to discuss the political power of the president's trip today.
