            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

The President left a sweltering Washington today for Cleveland, Ohio, but
before he left, he turned up the heat with a surprise visit at the White House
briefing for the Brady Press Room's final day before undergoing renovations.
On Hardball tonight, Mike Barnicle, sitting in for Chris Matthews, will have
the latest on how the President is handling the Middle East crisis and war in
Iraq. Our guest is Tim Russert, Washington Bureau Chief for NBC News and the
Moderator of Meet The Press.

Today lawyers for Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich, one of the Marines accused in the
Haditha incident, filed a lawsuit against Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) for his
response to the Haditha killings. In a statement today, Murtha responded, “I
don’t blame the staff sergeant for lashing out. When I spoke up about Haditha,
my intention was to draw attention to the horrendous pressure put on our troops
in Iraq and to the cover-up of the incident." Mark Zaid, one of Wuterich's
attorneys, will join us.

For the latest in the Middle East we'll hear from NBC's Richard Engel in Tyre
and Peter Alexander in Haifa. And for more on the military tactics there and
in Iraq, tonight we'll convene the Hardball War Council: Gen. Wayne Downing,
Lt. Col. Rick Francona, and Gen. Barry McCaffrey.

Our Hardballers will have the latest political ramifications of the Middle East
Conflict and War in Iraq. Kate O'Beirne, Washington Editor of the National
Review, Hardball Political Analyst Bob Shrum, and Todd Purdum of Vanity Fair
will be here. (Be sure to check out Purdum's latest article on Bush 41 and
Bush 43 in the September issue of Vanity Fair.)
