            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
President Bush was in Jordan today, scheduled to meet with Iraqi Prime Minister
Maliki, but that meeting was postponed until tomorrow, just as news surfaced of
a new memo written by National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley, raising doubts
over Maliki's ability to lead. NBC's Kelly O'Donnell is in Jordan tonight,
he'll be live with the latest. We'll also talk about the day's events with
Ambassador Feisal al-Istrabadi, Deputy Permanent Representative of Iraq to the
UN, followed by Richard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Go to www.politics.msnbc.com for more on this story.

Then, Robert Gates, the President's nominee for Defense Secretary, spoke out
today against the handling of the war in Iraq
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15952358. We'll be joined by Ambassador David
Satterfield from State Department about Gates, plus more on Iraq and the
President's trip to Jordan, and later in the show, Eugene Robinson from the
Washington Post and Philadelphia radio host Michael Smirconish will be here.

Before his November House win, Congressman-elect Chris Carney (D-PA), advised
the Pentagon before the Iraq war. Now, he's a member of Congress. Tonight
we'll get the full story from Carney, plus more on the politics of Iraq and
what the Dems plan to do next.

And we've got a full plate tonight for the Hardballers. Democratic Strategist
Steve McMahon and Matt Dowd of Hotsoup.com will hash out all the big news of
the day, including Senator-elect Webb's hot confrontation with Bush, the 2008
Contenders (minus Frist), and a declaration from former Sec. of State Colin
Powell that the conflict in Iraq is a civil war
