            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
Tonight, President Jimmy Carter plays Hardball. We'll talk to the former
Commander-in-Chief about Iraq and President Bush. Bush, in Lativa today for a
NATO summit, said the U.S. will not withdraw troops before its mission is
complete (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15910652/). Go to www.politics.msnbc.com
for the latest on all of today's political news, including Bush's meeting with
Iraqi Prime Minister Prime Minister Maliki, slated for later this week in
Jordan. We'll also ask Carter about the instability in other parts of Middle
East and his new book, "Palestine, Peace Not Apartheid."

On the Hill today, incoming House Speaker-to-be Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told
Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL) that he will not chair the House Intelligence
Committee. We'll get the full story from NBC's Mike Viqueira.

Then, engulfed in civil war, is diplomacy even possible in Iraq? We'll
continue the discussion on the political climate in Iraq and the influences of
Iran, Syria, Al Qaeda with the Washington Post's Robin Wright and US News and
World Report's David Gergen. And later in the show, Republican strategist and
former Bush 41 aide Ed Rogers and Democratic strategist Joe Trippi will be
here. How will the new Congress deal with Iraq? We'll put that question on
the table for Rogers and Trippi.
