The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
Dear Hardballers,
This dispatch is from the frontlines of the 2008 presidential election! We're
in Simi Valley, California, where the greatest political minds are gathering to
prepare, produce, and cover the GOP presidential candidates for their
first-in-the-nation debate. Mrs. Reagan has done it again. The library's
location is amazing and history is all around us.
Your faithful Hardballer advance team arrived Tuesday with debate moderator and
MSNBC election anchor Chris Matthews. We were ferried through the Malibu
mountains. We then greeted our debate partners from Politico.com (already
wearing shades) and they advised us on the quantity and quality of the
candidate questions sent in for the debate. Go to Politico.com to send in your
questions for the debate and vote on which ones you like the best.
Mike Barnicle's piece tonight on the Reagan Library is as breathtaking as the
Reagan Library itself. I spoke to our own Ron Reagan yesterday and he said I
have to see "the early Reagan years" exhibit which you can preview in
Barnicle's piece.
This debate is a dream come true for all of us. First, Mrs. Nancy Reagan sent
out the invites. Second, we have a great partner in political coverage,
Politico.com. And third, Chris Matthews, author of "Kennedy and Nixon," is the
moderator.
Fantastic news from Washington: Dina Powell, one of the Bush Administration's
top folks, is on her way to Goldman Sachs. Check it out and hope she remembers
your name.

Breakie with Mike Allen, lunch overlooking Air Force One, the sound of campaign
advance teams hovering over reporters...nothing like the smell of a debate in
the air!
Watch Hardball tonight for a taste of the excitement and political drama to
follow.
And here's a look at tonight's show:
Tonight Hardball gives you your first live glimpse of the site of the GOP
Presidential Candidates Debate. Chris hosts tonight's show from the Reagan
Library. First up, Chris will talk with top campaign advisers for the Giuliani
and Romney campaigns. What do their candidates need to say tomorrow night?
And Chris will talk to Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA)about the president's veto of the
war spending bill. Today the House failed to get enough votes to override
Bush's veto. So what's next? Then, Chris talks to someone who's been through
the rigors of a presidential campaign, and who was in the vice president
candidate on the Republican ticket in 1996 -- Jack Kemp. Kemp is also out
promoting the book Making War to Keep Peace, by former US Ambassador to the UN
Jeane Kirkpatrick, who passed away in December 2006. Mike Barnicle has a great
taped package on the Reagan Library and he gives us his thoughts on the
upcoming debate, along with Jim VandeHei of Politico.com and Eugene Robinson of
the Washington Post. Plus, Chris mixes it up with some of the students who
are at the Reagan Library. You won't want to miss a minute.
And don't forget... tomorrow night Chris Matthews moderates the GOP
Presidential Candidates Debate, sponsored by MSNBC, Politico.com and the Reagan
Library.
