The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
Tonight on Hardball, a homeland security scare many of us had never thought
of...terror groups dispatching members to the U.S. armed with deadly diseases
and the goal of mass infections. The frightening scenario seems more possible
after news of a Georgia man with tuberculosis taking a trans-Atlantic flight
from Europe to Canada and driving across the Canadian border into the U.S. with
a flagged passport and his name on the no-fly list. We'll talk about the
security breach and what should be done now with NBC terrorism analyst Michael
Sheehan and K.T. McFarland, who served as a deputy assistant secretary of
defense in the Reagan administration.
Then, "testing the waters"...campaign sources say former Tennessee senator Fred
Thompson will file FEC papers on Monday, June 4, widening the already-crowded
GOP field to eleven candidates. With just 53% of Republicans satisfied with
their candidate choices - compared to 78% of Democrats, according to the most
recent NBC/WSJ poll - can the big three handle Thompson's Law and Order?
We'll talk to Rep. Zack Wamp (R-TN), co-chair of the draft Thompson 2008
committee.
And religion and '08: after Rudy Giuliani said Roe v. Wade should be decided by
the states during MSNBC's Republican Presidential Candidates debate, a number
of Catholic organizations are taking issue with the former NYC mayor's stance
on abortion and other social policies. We'll hear from attorney Stephen
Dillard, founder of the soon-to-be-launched "Catholics Against Rudy" website
and Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne.
Plus, is Al Gore back, or just selling his book? In an exclusive interview on
MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann Tuesday night, Gore left the door open
for an '08 run. We'll take a look at the former Vice President's conversation
with Keith. And as the immigration debate continues, President Bush is taking
on members of his own party over his plans to allow illegal immigrants to
become legal. Michael Crowley from the New Republic, the Chicago Tribune's
Jill Zuckman, and Time's Mark Halperin will help us sort through all the day's
hot politics.
