The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
First Paris, now this...
Today in Washington, U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton said no way to delaying
Scooter Libby's 2 1/2 year prison sentence in the CIA leak case, a ruling that
could find Libby behind bars within 6 to 8 weeks.
According to the White House, President Bush feels "terribly" for Libby and his
family, but says he won't step in while Libby's appeal is pending. As the
clock ticks on Libby's time as a free man, the pressure is on President Bush:
will he spare Scooter?
Buckle your seat belts - guest host Mike Barnicle is at the wheel tonight. Up
first, Hardball's David Shuster has been on top of the Libby case all day.
He'll join us live from the courthouse with the latest. We'll also hear from
Dick Sauber - Matt Cooper's former attorney - on what's next for Libby. Does
he stand a chance in the appeals process? Will Bush step in with a pardon, or
will Libby sit down with the prosecution first?
Then, Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) plays Hardball. We'll get his take on Libby, Iraq
- new reports say no drop in violence three months after the troop buildup and
'08.
And get out the fire extinguisher, tonight's Hardball Debate is gonna be a hot
one. MSNBC political analyst Pat Buchanan and former Cheney aide Ron Christie
go head to head on Libby. As Christie defends Libby to the end, Pat says: do
the crime, pay the time! Don't miss it.
Plus, out Hardball Panel: CNBC's Chief Washington correspondent John Harwood,
the Washington Post's Jonathan Capehart, and Mike Grunwald, from Time hash out
all the day's biggest political news.
