            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
Independence Day isn't until tomorrow, but late Monday evening, President Bush
set off early Fourth of July fireworks by commuting Scooter Libby's prison
sentence, sparing the Vice President's former chief of staff from 2 1/2 years
behind bars. While Washington remains sharply divided over the decision, the
President today refused to rule out a full pardon for Libby.

Tonight, we'll hear from two of the main players in this DC drama: former
Ambassador Joe Wilson and Attorney Bob Bennett, who represented New York Times
reporter Judy Miller and talks with us exclusively this evening. Was Libby's
sentence excessive, as Bush wrote in the explanation of actions? Or is a White
House cover-up in play, as some critics claim? Kate O'Beirne, Washington
Editor of the National Review, and Ryan Lizza from the New Republic will duke
out all the questions in tonight's Hardball Debate.
Plus, more on the politics of Libby and the latest on the '08 contenders with
Norm Pearlstine, former Time editor-in-chief and author of "Off The Record: The
Press, the Government and the War over Anonymous Sources," MSNBC political
analyst Pat Buchanan and April Ryan from the American Urban Radio Network.
