            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
Just one day after President Bush urged his war critics to wait for Gen.
Petraeus's September progress report, Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe announced
today that she'll support a Democratic resolution with a firm timeline for Iraq
troop withdrawal. In a cable exclusive interview, the senator from Maine will
be here tonight to tell us why a decision on the troops can't wait. We'll also
hear from Snowe's Senate colleague from the other side of the aisle, Sen. John
Kerry (D-MA).

In other Washington news, former White House political director Sara Taylor
testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee that she did not talk to the
president about the U.S. attorney firings. Former White House counsel Harriet
Miers was slated to give her testimony tomorrow before the House Committee, but
late this afternoon was ordered by President Bush to defy the Congressional
subpoena and refuse to testify. We'll talk about the latest on that and all
the day's big political news with tonight's Hardball Panel: Chicago Tribune
editorial board director Bruce Dold, Newsweek's Michael Isikoff and Salon
editor-in-chief Joan Walsh.

Plus, the International Association of Fire Fighters put the heat on '08
contender Rudy Giuliani in new video. Hardball has the exclusive "first media
look" at the video and we'll talk about it with the President of the
Firefighters Harold Schaitberger.

And don't miss tonight's Hardball Debate: as Congress investigates why we went
to war in Iraq - Joe Wilson testified today on Capitol Hill - should the
president's clemency of Scooter Libby be next on the docket? We'll ask GOP
strategist Michelle Laxalt and Melanie Sloan, executive director of CREW.
