            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
Karl Rove hits Washington with an August surprise and announces he's leaving
the White House. Has the "architect" finished building with Bush, or will
Rove's behind-the-scenes political constructions continue from outside the
Beltway?

We're gathering the Hardball "brains" for the latest on the man dubbed Bush's
"brain" and what his departure will mean for the White House, Republicans and
who wins in '08.

Plus, Republicans in the Hawkeye State pushed Mitt Romney to the top of the
heap at Saturday's Straw Poll, but Mike Huckabee says the real story should be
how his campaign rallied to a second-place finish in Iowa with much less money
to spend. Tonight, Huckabee plays Hardball!

Up first, Hardball Correspondent David Shuster reports on Rove's resignation.
With Democrats controlling Congress and the president's approval ratings in the
20's, had Rove's golden touch turned into a political kiss of death? We'll
hear from Wayne Slater, co-author of "Bush's Brain," and MSNBC Political
Analyst Pat Buchanan. And later in the show, more on the story in tonight's
Hardball Debate: Now that he's leaving the White House, should the Rove be
forced to testify on his role in the firing of the nine U.S. attorneys and the
CIA leak? Former U.S. attorney Joe DiGenova and Melanie Sloan, executive
director of C.R.E.W. and attorney for Joe and Valerie Wilson will duke it out.

Then, Chris has the scoop on all the hot political happenings and we'll have
more on the Iowa Straw Poll and the latest '08 news with our Hardball Panel -
Townhall.com's Amanda Carpenter, Josh Green from the Atlantic, and the New
Yorker's Peter Boyer.
