The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
First up - the bailout goes bust!
Senator McCain told NBC's Kelly O'Donnell today that politics played too great
a role in the collapse of the $700 billion bailout package. Meanwhile, polls
show voters have put the blame mostly on Republicans, and by extension - John
McCain. Tonight we'll bring you the latest on the politics of the financial
crisis with Fmr. House Majority Leader Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX) and Rep. Chris Van
Hollen (D-MD), chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Yesterday's jaw-dropping 777 point drop in the DOW cost Americans about a
trillion dollars on paper. Today, the DOW rebounded by nearly 500 points. What
happens if Congress can't get a rescue package done? How long before Main
Street begins to feel the real effects of the meltdown on Wall Street? We'll
bring in CNBC's Maria Bartiromo to explain what could be in store for our
economy in the days and weeks ahead.
Next - the perils of Palin! Sarah Palin's performance in the past two weeks has
made it imperative that she doesn't fail in Thursday's debate. Can she beat
expectations? Will Joe Biden avoid his foot-in-mouth habit? We'll take a look
at the perils facing both candidates and preview Thursday's debate with MSNBC's
Pat Buchanan and Nancy Skinner, who's been involved in Democratic V.P. debate
preparation.
And bailout belly laughs! When it comes to the financial crisis, the late night
comedians are getting into the act. Check out their biggest laughs in the
Hardball Sideshow.
Plus in the Politics Fix - what does the bailout mess mean for the presidential
race? Who will step up to the plate and seize this issue? Our roundtable
tonight includes CNBC's John Harwood and the Washington Post's Keith Richburg.
