Yes, if you read this is sounds like it is done already, but it really
isn't. VistA, of course, will be the core of it, but it needs a number of
things added, like pediatrics and OBGYN and a GUI scheduling interface,
something to capture billing data, etc. The plan is for it to be released to
run on Windows and Cache, and I suspect it will be rapidly ported to run on
GTM and Linux as well. It will be in the public domain. (If anything I say
is wrong, I should be corrected shortly as I believe the project manager is
a member of the Hardhats list. ;-) )

Also, I just noticed I had this on the wrong list hardhats-members-admin
instead of hardhats-members. My apologies to Greg. I am not sure how it
happened, but I will try to figure it out and not do it again.

Nancy,

Can you tell me where I can get more information on this? I would like to
learn more about the software and its requirements.

Thanks so much.

Regards,

Joe

One of the world's most sophisticated software systems for keeping
electronic health records will soon be easily available to doctors,
hospitals and clinics around the country, courtesy of VA and the federal
Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The system, called VistA-Office
Electronic Health Record, was developed by VA. A version of VistA is used
at more than 1,300 VA facilities throughout the United States to maintain
records on 5 million veterans who receive their health care from VA.
Private-sector health care providers will soon be able to obtain a version
of VistA at nominal cost. Distribution of the software is expected to begin
in late 2005. VistA offers health care providers a complete electronic
record covering all aspects of patient care, including reminders for
preventive health care, electronic entry of pharmaceutical orders, display
of laboratory results, consultation requests, x-rays and pathology slides.
Besides the VA system, VistA is currently used by the Department of Health
for the District of Columbia, plus health care systems in Finland, Germany,
Egypt and Nigeria.
