For the information of the hardhats (and Joseph's separate comment), I'll just mention that the Standards Industry is not all that exclusive but there are processes that keep inputs during the developement stage balanced. We had that during the MDC 1972-1999. Each Standards Developer Organization (SDO) has their own processes approved by ANSI in the US as proper for "Voluntary Consensus". Nancy is a member of E-31 Technical Committee and the Technical Subcommittee E-31.19 on EHR Structure and Content. The CCR is being developed by E-31.28 on the Electronic Health Record (confusing due to other issues). We can get her on that SC and we are working to get the E-31.19 SC Chair to the WV meeting so he can explain how the two activities will be coordinated. This should help the WV and Hardhats be able to keep informed about the CCR (really a messaging standard) and how it will be coordinated to achieve exchange of EHR informtion in a common fashion. This should help ensure that the various re-configurations of VistA can be described in working detail with respect to how they can meet the Requirements of the VistA-Office being presented at the high level at the CMS meeting and other WV projects such as ObGyn/Peds. Steve Wagner, who is communication with Nancy, will be at the meeting and is in communication with VA folks here in Seattle with regard to VistA reconfigurations and documentation and relationship to standards (which are related to conceptual content as much as to implementing technology-though folks get mesmerized by technolog). For VistA and its adaptation to the non-VA world, a unified approach is key and is complementary to work with the non-VistA Suppliers who must use the same common conceptual content and available technology. The WV focus and challenge is how to do this productively. So keep posted.

When you look at all of the links in this reference, it is clear that potential buyers will be much more receptive to candidates such as VistA (e. g. VistA Office) if it can be shown how the recommended standard vocabularies and other informatics standards given in the target aources are incorporated and used in the VistA architecture. We've started (but not yet completed such and explanation in the VistA Intro document. We need to begin telling the VistA story in those terms and put the reference documents up on the web and point the press and the policy report writers to them. This information will also help this discussion about CHINs Community Health Information Networks and other regional information architectures; VistA has capabilities that contribute to that effort also.
