RAID 5 protects against the loss of a disk, but has a performance penalty, so if disks are cheap and performance matters, RAID 01 or RAID 10 are better. But if performance is not important, as in a training system, then RAID 5 gives the most efficient use of disk space while protecting against the loss of any single disk.
