I suppose that's an option, but it seems unreasonably pessimistic to
me. A popular solution to this problem is to use HL7, but obviously you
need HL7 support in the non-VistA components, too. VistA provides other
options, like the RPC Broker (used by CPRS), SMTP via server options in
Mailman, or raw TCP (via CALL^%ZISTCP and %LISTEN^%ZISTCP). I'm notg
sure what other options might be available in the FOIA releaase.

Of course, it is my opinion that it implementing high level protocols
via generic tools is the way to go, and have used this approach in my
own work. Another tool I find useful, and with which I've had a lot of
success, is the MXML parser. I haven't gone this route, but
implementing XML-RPC or  SOAP over HTTP seems eminently doable.
