I'd personally rather have a smart card that linked me to a network. The network would pull down and put in the latest medical data but only after I authorized it with my card. Having all my data on the card (or iPod) would be dangerous - especially since my wife can't usually find her insurance card and keys, misplacing your medical data would be worse.
Then the smart card links your insurance, medical history, and authorizes treatment.
