Comments below. You may find it worthwhile to review the database backup
exercises from the GT.M Acculturation CD, especially the use of mupip backup
-bytestream -since and mupip restore.

I am using a script, called by crontab, to back up my
database on a regular basis.

I use this command:
mupip backup bytestream "*" tmp/vista_backup

[KSB] Maybe mupip backup -bytestream (with a hyphen)? Also, since the default
for -bytestream is since=database, perhaps you are backing up unnecessarily?

I then use rsync to upload it to our windows server,
where it is include in its backup.

So far, the file that is created with this method are
about 9 mb.

This seems to be much smaller than the size of my
mumps.dat file (which is 86,186,544 bytes).

Questions:
1) Why the size discrepancy?

[KSB] You are only backing up the blocks that changed since your last -database
backup.

2) How can I test if my backup is working properly?

[KSB] Mupip restore

Kevin
