Actually I think the VA has plans to be able to use any number of SQL databases when they are done with this rehosting, but I doubt that any SQL database will beat the speed of M. After all, it was specifically designed for use in this setting. Relational databases are going to be better for some things, but I don't think this setting is one of them.
